Opening courtyard of the former Convent of Retreat
Impact Hub Siracusa oversaw the renovation of the courtyard of the former Retreat Convent, thanks to the project by architect Marco Terranova, who has been designing and building with natural and recycled materials for years. The project for the courtyard was named Ortigia + 4 (space of fertile land), whose objective was to create structures with an abundant portion of fertile soil. The soil was housed in tanks with wooden structure and covering, waterproofed inside and equipped with an internal stratification suitable for drainage and water collection. The garden wall was perfectly integrated with the limestone of the courtyard and was characterized by native plants as well as a composter, able to transform the organic waste of the kitchen through a composting process. In the realization were involved the startup La.boo, who contributed its know-how on the bamboo plant, used as a structure for climbing plants, Coldiretti Sicilia, who supported the initiative as technical sponsor, and the students of the master “Il Progetto di Riciclo”, who followed the development of the project from the choice of materials to the assembly and assembly phase.
